Infosys to hire 40,000 new employees in 2011

Infosys has announced plans of hiring 40,000 new employees in the ongoing fiscal, up from the earlier projection of 36,000.

"The IT industry is very bullish on hiring. Even if the hiring is not very substantial in the third quarter, it will definitely be in line with last few quarters," Kelly IT resources director Thammaiah BN said.

He added that though mid-level hiring will continue, the same might not be said for entry-level recruitment.

TCS, which saw a volume growth of 11 per cent in the quarter ended September 30, 2010, said, "The company has seen significant deal closures across sectors and the deal pipeline is expected to be good."

"There was strong momentum in demand (during the September quarter)... While the macro-economic environment continues to remain uncertain, there is higher degree of confidence at the micro level," Wipro's Azim Premji said.

Staffing firm GlobalHunt said increment cycles were due for a lot of people in the industry as IT firms had either not offered salary hikes or cut compensation costs in view of the economic slowdown.

"During the recession period in 2008 and 2009, many companies either did not offer salary hikes and some went in for compensation cut. Now with demand for IT services returning to the market, companies are ramping up headcount and offering good packages to meet the demand," GlobalHunt director Sunil Goel said.

Also, most companies hired minimally from campuses last year since clients across major markets like the US and the Europe were in recession and were cutting down on IT spends.

According to industry body Nasscom, the Indian IT industry is estimated to have added 90,000 jobs during FY'10, taking the workforce to 2.3 million professionals.

With demand for workforce returning, attrition rates have also gone up. While TCS reported an attrition rate of 14.1 per cent, Infosys saw attrition rates to the tune of 17.1 per cent for the quarter ended September 30, 2010.

High attrition rates are not new for the industry as it is an indication of the robustness of the sector, feel the headhunters. "In any up-market situation, attrition rate of 16-17 per cent, especially in IT cos, is not alarming. IT companies have been facing this since 2004 onwards," Goel said.

Attrition tells growth story of IT sector and this is the time for companies to recognise and reward the talent available internally and build the bench strength for upcoming projects, he added.

On wage hikes, Goel said, "The average trend has been 20-30 per cent on current compensation and in some specific and niche skills, it has gone up to 50-60 per cent." At the end of September 30, 2010, the top three players-- TCS, Infosys and Wipro, reported about 0.41 million on their payrolls.

TCS to hire 50,000 people in 2011

Software major Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is planning to hire around 50,000 people over the next 12 months.

"In Chennai, we will be adding around 12,000 people taking the total in the city to 50,000. We will also have a small presence in Coimbatore," N. Chandrasekaran, CEO and MD of TCS, told reporters here.

"Currently the company has around 12,000 foreigners on its rolls and this is set to go up as we will be hiring in China, Europe and Latin America.," he added. Currently, the company has around 177,000 employees on its rolls

Commenting on its lateral recruitments, he said: "We didn't consciously avoid campus recruitment. The academic cycle got over when we hired, so we had to resort to lateral hiring." However, with the end of semester now, campus interviews has begun again, he added.

With a view to filling the major skill gap in the industry, TCS plans to fund 200 doctoral candidates over a period of five years. It has selected 22 candidates and will select another 18 by next February.

"They will pursue basic research in computer science. Our funding the research scholars is not linked to the development of IPRs for the company or their becoming our employees," he said.

Financial markets open up 32,000 entry-level jobs

About 6,900 Companies Are Looking To Hire Freshers, Finds Survey

FOR those recently out of college and aspiring for a career in the financial markets, the outlook appears promising, going by the estimates of the National Institute of Securities Markets (NISM). The Sebi-promoted public trust has forecast a demand for at least 32,000 entry-level personnel in the securities business over the next one year. NISM has based the report on inputs from the human resources (HR) heads of securities and capital market companies.

The NISM report says around 6,900 companies involved in stock broking, asset management, portfolio management services, investment banking, insurance, private equity/venture capital, and distribution, will require entry-level employees.

"We will hire over 5,000 people across various levels and group businesses this year," says K Achuthan, chief people's officer, Reliance Capital. "The largest number of managers would be hired by Reliance Life Insurance followed by our securities business across regions."

Mr Achuthan says the hiring would be in addition to the lakhodd agents that the company plans to appoint in its insurance business by the end of this fiscal. "The hiring momentum is back, though still selective," he says.

Industry officials say that the hiring scenario has improved in the last two quarters and most of them are revising their targets upwards for the remaining part of this financial year and the next year.

According to NISM estimates, retail – direct sales in the insurance, broking and distribution category — would be the biggest employer, hiring around 21,000 people.

"Most of our requirement is on the sales side for retail direct sales," Sudhir Dhar, senior vice-president and head HR, Motilal Oswal, says.

"We are targeting to hire about 200 people by the end of this financial year. The number was raised recently after signs that the economy has picked up once again. The rest of the segment is usually witnessing replacement jobs only," Mr Dhar says.

Dhruv Desai, senior vice-president, HR and Leadership Academy, of Angel Broking, a retail broking firm, says retail business is expected to grow at about 15% every year.

"We think the market is still untapped and we are planning to add 2,000 people in various segments like sales, services and back office over the next one year. Most of the recruitment — about 800-1,200 — would be in sales, as we look to expand our branches to newer untapped areas," Mr Desai says.

Angel is looking to hire 400-500 people in the services and about 500-600 for its back office operations.

Says SREI Infrastructure chairman & managing director Hemant Kanoria: "We were hiring even during the lean years of 2008-09 due to good growth of our earnings and disbursements. We intend to hire more across all levels in segments like equipment finance, project finance, insurance broking, investment banking, venture capital fund as well as its mutual fund business."

Satyam targets campus recruits in hiring spree

MAHINDRA SATYAM will go on a hiring spree over the next twelve months and for the first time in more than two years the information technology company plans to visit campuses next year to select fresh IT graduates.

"We are going to recruit close to 3,000 employees across various technologies and competencies. The hiring will begin in the next three months and will be spread over one year," MV Sridhar, head of sports marketing, told Financial Chronicle. Sridhar is in charge of recruitment in the company, which is part of Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) group.

The company decided to increase the headcount after winning more than 35 new clients and securing extension of contracts with existing clients such as GE and GlaxoSmithKline.

Recently, the Hyderabad-based firm won a multi-million deal from a large health insurer. It is one of the three companies that have been selected to weed out duplicate identities in the Union government's unique identity project.

"The recruitment process will commence simultaneously in Hyderabad, Chennai and Bangalore. We are looking to hire mostly for domains such as SAP , enterprise solutions, Oracle and business intelligence," Sridhar said.

Mahindra Satyam has vacancies in its engineering and infrastructure management verticals. The company's headcount had plunged after M&M took the reins of the company in 2009 af ter an accounting fraud by its founder and chairman Ramalinga Raju, which left Satyam on the brink of collapse. At present, it employs 30,000, down almost 30 per cent from Raju's time.

About 7,000 employees were retrenched as the new management tried to resurrect the company while battling the global economic crisis and the impact of the fraud at the same time.

As part of its revival, Mahindra Satyam has teamed up with Tech Mahindra, another IT firm from the group, to execute projects. Tech Mahindra, which has a long association with British Telecom, is handling telecom projects given its expertise in the domain.

The two companies have also set up joint taskforces to handle issues related to infrastructure, human resources, technology and purchases.

Cognizant plans to recruit 12,000 college students

IT service provider Cognizant Technology Solutions plans to hire close to 12,000 fresh graduates this year. The company added 10,300 employees in the last quarter to take the total headcount to about 78,400 as of December 31, 2009.

"We will hire 12,000 college students this year," Lakshmi Narayanan, vicechairman of Cognizant, said at the CII seminar on cyber security held on Saturday.

"Hiring fresh graduates brings up the challenge of imposing controls to make them adhere to security guidelines within the organisation. They are exposed to the internet and other electronic gadgets and are used to constantly sharing their experiences with friends over the web. They are initially uncomfortable to adjust to corporate regulations on cyber security," he added.

For over a year, Cognizant has been refraining from giving guidance on fresh recruitments. The company has only been reporting net employee additions along with periodical financial results.

After freezing fresh recruitments in the first two quarters of the last year

(January December), Cognizant made 700 job offers to final semester students at Anna University's constituent colleges in Q4. The company then started inducting lateral entrants in Q3. While Cognizant globally added 400 employees in Q2 last year, it recruited approximately 3,900 professionals during the Q3.

In the wake of a slow market recovery in 2009, Cognizant reported about 24 per cent increase in net profit to $535 million compared to $430.80 million for 2008.
